In 1979, a severe famine struck a northern Chinese village, where residents barely survived on bark and wild vegetables. Seeing his bedridden sick mother and younger siblings gaunt with hunger, returning veteran Lin Dashan secretly took out his family's three-generation-old hunting rifle and went into the mountains to hunt.
