Chu Zhao, from a military family, conceals his martial background to take the imperial exam to clear his father’s unjust conviction. But political rivals frame him for cheating, claiming a general is unfit for the exam, landing him in prison. At the critical moment, Shen Qingci—imperial censor’s daughter with a contractual marriage to him—risked her life to defend him and demand a retrial. Chu Zhao, with quick wit and real talent, exposes the forged exam paper, brings down corrupt exam officials, vindicates his father, and gains true love beyond their contract.
