In 1980s rural Northeast China, Lin Xiaoman, a 20-year-old girl, flees home in heavy snow to avoid an arranged marriage. Saved by Chen Beifeng, a young educated youth from the city, they fall in love in the cold wind and marry despite family opposition and gossip. The newlyweds live in a drafty adobe house, run small businesses to make a living, study under kerosene lamps at night, survive financial hardships and misunderstandings, and finally build a warm and happy life in the freezing cold.
