In the 1980s, sharp-tongued Shen Cuilan defied public gossip at the market and took in disgraced, down-on-his-luck former doctor Gu Yanqing, who was framed and stripped of his position. A matchmaker tried to marry her to a lame old bachelor, and a rival spread rumors about the doctor's reputation to the factory manager—many called the doctor a burden and urged her to send him away.
