Lin Wan, a city journalist, returns to Tazhai Village to claim her grandfather's old house as per his will, only to be blocked by her uncle—the village chief—who cites "clan rules prohibiting property from leaving the village." Reuniting with Chen Mo, her childhood friend and now a forest ranger, they stumble upon a wooden box hidden in the old house's wall: inside are a 30-year-old contract to protect Tazhai's ancient nanmu forest and evidence of her uncle's plan to sell the forest illegally. When clan elders surround the ancestral hall to expel Lin Wan, Chen Mo presents old photos of her grandfather risking his life to protect the forest, while Lin Wan pulls out legal documents: the old house is her grandfather's private property, and the ancient forest has long been a state-protected area.
