Pastry chef Lin Xiaoman warms the small town with her handmade candy stall, until gentle programmer Gu Chuan appears—he buys a lemon candy every day, listening to her stories behind the candy wrappers, their bond sweet like melted nougat. But Gu Chuan always disappears at 10 PM. Xiaoman follows him to an old building, only to see him feeding medicine to his critically ill mother, and overhears his secret: “The glaucoma surgery has only a 30% success rate, I’m leaving abroad next week.” His tenderness is a “sugar coating,” hiding the “sand” of fearing to burden her. When Xiaoman pushes the door open with ginger candy boiled all night, in Gu Chuan’s tears, there’s the unspoken “I love you, but I dare not” wrapped in the scent of sugar.
