Five-year-old Xiaoman suddenly gains the ability to hear phones' "whispers"—they grumble about their owners' hidden struggles in a childlike, whiny tone: Mom's phone complains she's hiding a layoff to spare the family, Dad's phone gripes about his secret DD job to save for Xiaoman's school district house, and Grandma's phone sniffles about skipping blood pressure meds to cut costs. Xiaoman uses these "whispers" as clues to help: she drags Mom to submit job apps, shows Dad's DD orders to Mom, and hides Grandma's pills to take to the doctor. At first, the family thinks she's misbehaving—until they realize their tiny girl is using her unique way to "save" them. When they finally open up, they learn: the one who "leads" them through hard times is none other than their little one, who uses phone whispers to bridge their unspoken gaps and glue their hearts back together.
