After her father's death, Lin Xiaoman goes to see butcher Zhou Qiang— a "ferocious man" with a bone-chopping knife on his chopping board— carrying a debt note, fearing she'll be sold to repay it. But she discovers that the people Zhou chases away with his knife every night aren't her, but the debt collectors waiting at the alley to harm her. It turns out Zhou's son drowned saving Xiaoman five years ago; he claims "the father repays the son's debt," but he's actually fulfilling his son's promise to "protect Xiaoman for life." When Xiaoman finds the photo of Zhou's son hidden in the knife box, she realizes that blood-stained knife is the only light piercing her dark nights.
