In 1980s Kua Tian Alley, divorced factory worker Zhou Xiulan struggled to raise her daughter, enduring the neighborhood’s gossip like sharp thorns—her factory wanted to fire her for “moral issues”, her landlord threatened eviction for “bad luck”, and even her daughter was called a “bastard” because of her. Until university teacher Lin Weidong showed up: a regular at the alley’s bookstore, he’d long noticed this woman who saved the last boiled egg for her daughter and熬 porridge before dawn. When Zhou was publicly shamed by her boss as “unworthy of her job”, Lin rushed over, holding a crumpled marriage application: “I’m marrying Zhou Xiulan! She’s not a ‘broken shoe’—she’s the one I want to cherish forever!” It turned out he’d secretly gathered neighbors’ kind testimonials to save her job and tutored her daughter in math every day. Trembling, Zhou asked, “What do you want from me?” Lin smiled and handed her a warm sugar packet: “I want the fragrance of your porridge, the tight stitches of your mended schoolbag, and the warm poem you’ve made out of life—the warmest one I’ve ever seen.” Later, when they held their wedding feast in the alley, neighbors came with pickled vegetables and eggs to celebrate. Zhou touched the red silk flower on her chest, finally daring to look up at the sun—turns out, when someone holds you in the light, even the wind tastes sweet.
