During three years of devastating drought and famine, Qingwu Town lies barren, with tragic incidents of cannibalism frequenting. Shen Qing, a just-adopted orphan, hides in a dilapidated temple with her little sister Ahe, who falls into a coma from hunger. In despair, she accidentally finds a secret grain-storage map left by her long-missing father, digging out half a cellar of grain seeds and farming tools on a remote hillside. Enduring hunger to reclaim wasteland, she outwits black-hearted grain merchants hoarding grains for exorbitant profits. She not only keeps her sister alive but also saves more displaced refugees with reserved grains, building a warm haven in desperate times.
