In the Republic of China, Su Wantang, the top opera performer, seeks revenge for her family's massacre by scheming to marry Shen Yanqing, the cold-faced military governor she believes is her enemy. But on their wedding night, when she presses a dagger to his throat, she spots the jade pendant of Gu Zhao, her old love, around his neck—revealing that the man before her is Gu Zhao's uncle! Even more shocking, the key clue to her family's murder lies in the opera *Red Performer* she's sung a thousand times: the line "Cinnabar letter in the burning paper house" points to a blood debt ledger in Shen's secret room, and Shen Yanqing's late old love—Gu Zhao's mother—was the only survivor of the Su family's destruction. When the flame of revenge collides with the shock of uncle-nephew kinship, and the strings of *Red Performer* uncover layers of truth, Su Wantang holds the blood-stained script and stares at Shen Yanqing in the audience—will this ten-year-old opera end in death or redemption through love?
