After their deadly rivalry turned into hidden affection in Season 1, the emperor and empress were about to confess—until old enemies returned with a late emperor's edict, branding the empress a "monster who kills the emperor." The emperor pretends to be cold, smashing her tonic in court; the empress retaliates by wrecking his study and replacing his warhorse. Secretly, he sends guards to shield her, while she slips him her protective amulet. They claim to "want the other dead first," but their "fights" are masks for "I don't want you to die."
