In Republican-era Shanghai, Shen Yanqing, the heir to a powerful gang, spent a decade disguised as Buddhist monk 'Jingkong'—all to protect Su Ruanruan, the 'sister' he’d raised since childhood. He hid his gangster identity behind sutras and wooden fish, shielding her from the enemies who’d hunted her as a child. But when Ruanruan uncovers the truth—she’s not his real sister, but a 'decoy' his parents took in to save him—she confronts him through tears: 'Brother, did you always know we weren’t family?' Staring at her red-rimmed eyes, Shen Yanqing finally crushes the prayer beads he’s worn for ten years. His 'vows'? They were never for Buddha—they were fear: fear that admitting his love would break the 'brother' mask he’d used to stay close to her. The monk who never strayed? He’s been in love with her all along. And for her, he’d break every rule.
