Lin Wan, the Emperor's most trusted shadow guard, is suddenly given a death order—to protect Su Tang, the Prime Minister's daughter who just arrived in the capital. The Emperor claims Su Tang is "the daughter of an old friend" and demands Lin Wan "protect her with her life". But Lin Wan soon discovers Su Tang is no delicate lady: she uses sleeping powder to subdue enemies, sneaks into the Ministry of Justice at night to investigate cases, and even secretly digs into the Emperor's old secret of "massacring a city during a rebellion". Lin Wan gradually realizes the Emperor's "protection" is actually "surveillance"—he fears Su Tang will uncover the massacre truth and threaten his throne. Torn between the monarch she's served for years and the lady she's falling for, when Su Tang's investigation hits the core secret and a killer's knife presses against her neck, Lin Wan must choose: remain the Emperor's shadow, or risk her life to save Su Tang?
