Lin Xiaohe, a determined girl from an impoverished mountain village, clashes with her patriarchal father who values sons over daughters. When she gets accepted into a prestigious city high school, her father tears up the admission letter and forces her into an arranged marriage. With help from a volunteer teacher, Xiaohe flees the mountains under cover of darkness - but the road ahead holds both promise and peril.
