Lin Xiaotang, a modern social-phobic programmer, accidentally travels back to 1985 and ends up in a state-owned machinery factory while burning the midnight oil on a project. She’s bonded with the “National Dance King System” — she must win the city workers’ cultural palace dance competition in three months to return to the present. Once someone who hid backstage during company parties, she now has to grit her teeth to learn disco and battle breakdance. She also mistakenly crosses paths with Chen Mo, the “cold-faced technical backbone” who believes “technology is the only right path.” He frowns at her “outlandish” dances yet silently protects her when hooligans pick on her. Between the system’s urgent progress pushes and Chen Mo’s tsundere care, Lin Xiaotang gradually realizes under the neon lights of retro discos: what’s more important than “going back to the modern world” is rediscovering the bold, loving version of herself in the fiery hopes of the 1980s.
