In the famine era, 50-year-old Li Guilan is the village's infamous “shrew” who scolds anyone in her path—chasing away grain thieves, terrifying the village tyrant who hoards relief food, even making the village head avoid her. But no one knows her “ferocity” is a disguise: she hides medicine for her terminally ill mother-in-law and grain for her young daughter under the stove. When the tyrant discovers her secret and comes to steal the medicine, Li Guilan snaps: “The relief food you embezzled is fuller than my rice jar!” She’d long documented the tyrant’s crimes, using her “sharp-tongued reputation” to unite villagers and get justice. As villagers thank her with grain bags, she’s feeding medicine to her mother-in-law—her “scolding” was never a weapon, but a shield to protect her family.
