Lin Xiaoman, a modern archaeology student, gains the ability to “see” Gu Zhao—a Warring States-era young general doomed to be framed by traitors and die in battle—through a jade pendant she’s restoring. Her touch sends modern items to Gu’s time, and Gu soon realizes “someone unseen is aiding him”: Xiaoman teaches him to use a lighter to cut his bonds, while Gu fills bamboo slips with “I want to see your face clearly.” But just as Gu is about to expose the traitors, the pendant cracks—the cost of time travel is that one of their existences could be “erased.” Can they cling to the fragile red thread linking them across a millennium?
