In 1930s Shanghai, architect Cheng Yuan and opera star Shen Qinghe meet after a theater fire. As they collaborate on rebuilding the venue, love blossoms - until Cheng gets framed for arms smuggling. When he returns after clearing his name, Qinghe is already betrothed to a warlord. At the theater's reopening, they share a heart-wrenching moment: Cheng plays a piano adaptation of 'The Peony Pavilion' while Qinghe silently sings along backstage, their eyes meeting across a lotus pond in what becomes the Republic era's most restrained love story.
