Lin Xiuqing, a 50-year-old retired teacher living alone for years, meets Zhou Jianguo, a reserved retired engineer, at the community chess club. They develop feelings as chess companions. Xiuqing initially thinks it's just a confidant bond for middle age, but accidentally uncovers Zhou's 20-year secret crush—back when her father was in hospital, Zhou secretly paid the medical bills and has been caring about her all along. Just as Xiuqing hesitates over her feelings, her daughter returns abruptly from abroad, firmly opposing her mother's remarriage. A storm of intergenerational twilight romance erupts, and the thrill of life after fifty faces dual tests from family affection and past secrets.
