On his wedding night, a local bully arrives to humiliate the poor scholar's new wife and even tries to take her away. Cornered, the scholar is not only backed by his fierce wife, but also learns that his wife's six older brothers—bandit leaders ruling a mountain stronghold—have just arrived! The scholar and his wife team up to kill the bully, kicking off their rise. Starting with only three thatched huts, the scholar uses his wisdom to ally with his brothers-in-law's forces, making steady progress among warlords in chaotic times, subordinating heroes, eliminating separatist forces, and finally ascending to the throne, writing a legend of a poor scholar changing fate and founding an imperial career.
