Lin Wanyi, a girl from a poor family, disguises herself as a man to take the imperial exam in the capital—only by winning the top scholar (plucking the laurel) can she present her father's wrongful death case to the emperor. But she immediately crosses paths with Gu Zhaoyuan, a nobleman who sees through her disguise at a glance. Instead of exposing her, he secretly helps her deal with biased examiners and enemy plots. Just as Lin Wanyi is on the verge of becoming the top scholar, Gu Zhaoyuan's identity as the emperor's secret guard is revealed, and her female identity is targeted by villains. Will she stick to her obsession of clearing her father's name, or give up her long-planned scheme for Gu Zhaoyuan?
