Restorer Su Xiaoan takes on the renovation of a century-old western-style building in the old town and stumbles upon a diary written by Cheng Mo, a Republican-era architect. Between the lines are his obsessions with the building: fleeing with design drafts during the war, saying goodbye to his lover in front of the building, and writing “waiting for someone who understands it” while drawing at midnight. Strangely, every time Su touches the relics in the diary—a silver pocket watch engraved with “Mo”, a yellowed half-draft—she can “see” Cheng’s past. When the building faces demolition, Su fights to save it, only to find on the last page of the diary: the day Cheng wrote “waiting for you” is exactly her birthday. The “distance” across time finally becomes the most touching “acquaintance”—some understanding has been waiting since a hundred years ago.
