Su Wan, a singer at the small-town "Shanhai Tavern," clings to her grandfather's legacy by singing the ancestral "Ballad of Mountains and Seas," fiercely fighting developers who want to bulldoze the tavern for a resort. Then comes Gu Heng, a top music producer—his new song is accused of plagiarizing the ballad, and he must find the original copyright to clear his name. From bickering foes to allies, they dig through her grandfather's old diaries hidden in wine jars, learn the lost refrain from a village grandma, and even patch up the tavern together during a typhoon. Finally, they discover the ballad is a collective "love letter to the mountains and seas" written by fishermen, woodcutters, and singers over generations. As Gu Heng rearranges it with electronic beats and Su Wan sings atop the tavern roof to the sea, the nostalgia buried by concrete and two wandering hearts both find their anchor in the melody.
