Lin Xiaoman, a down-and-out aquarium owner, is on the brink of closing her grandfather’s “Yuwei Aquarium” when she discovers late at night that the shop’s sacred red arowana can spit glowing scales—each scale grants her a day of “perfect luck”: creditors give extensions, the landlord lowers rent, even her crush, the community doctor, starts talking to her. But as she uses more scales, the fish grows weaker, and her grandfather’s old diary reveals the truth: “This fish is my ‘atonement token’ made with half my life. Every use adds to my debt.” When the last scale is about to fall, Xiaoman must choose: keep using the fish’s life for her “ease,” or pay off the “invisible debt” her grandfather left behind?
