Lin Wan, an antique restorer known as a 'freak' for her ability to 'hear' traces of sound from old objects, receives a charred phonograph engraved with 'Proposal for A-Ning'. The client is Gu Zhao, grandson of the phonograph's owner Grandma Gu. Gu Zhao initially scoffs at 'talking antiques', but in the fragments restored by Lin Wan, he hears his grandfather's choked voice from decades ago: 'I saved thirty years of candy, never got to peel one for you.' As they repair the phonograph, they uncover Grandma Gu's lifelong pain—she thought her husband 'ran away' from the proposal, but didn't know he recorded his vows before dying, and shielded the phonograph with his body in a fire. Lin Wan's ability? A后遗症 from her father shoving a recorder into her hand as he protected her in a fire—inside was his last words: 'Don't be afraid, Dad's here.' When the phonograph finally plays the full recording, Grandma Gu touches the scratches on it through tears, while Lin Wan, in the hot cocoa Gu Zhao hands her, hears his long-hidden confession: 'I want to be the one who protects your embers too.'
