Lu Xiaochuan, a modern paper craftsman, triggers the "Liaozhai Binding System" through his family’s ancient Paper Crafting Secret Records. He wakes up to find himself in the world of Liaozhai—where fox spirits knock on his door begging for osmanthus cakes, vengeful ghosts squat at his stall listening to operas, and even little ghosts from the City God Temple beg him to make paper horses as "underworld shared bikes." Planning to earn "Yin Virtue Points" with his paper-crafting skills to unlock system abilities, he’s纠缠 ed by the mischievous fox spirit Xiaotang: she steals his talisman water (making her tail puff up in a frenzy), snatches his paper figure "Xiaobai" to trick peach cakes, and insists on being his "ghost-hunting partner." While handling bizarre ghostly cases—clearing a wronged scholar’s name, helping a grieving ghost find her paper wedding dress—they bicker daily: Xiaochuan complains, "You’re harder to deal with than a vengeful ghost!" Xiaotang retorts, "Even your paper figure is better at pleasing me than you!" But when Xiaochuan is possessed by a ghost during a system mission, Xiaotang uses her thousand-year demon pill to shield him from a fatal blow, her eyes red as she says, "I haven’t had enough of your osmanthus cakes yet"—her sharp tongue hides unspoken affection.
