In early Republican China, Gu Haitang, a Western-educated painter, meets conservative heiress Su Wanqing at an art exhibition. They fall in love at first sight but are torn apart by feuding families. Haitang gives up his chance to study abroad, while Wanqing secretly sponsors his exhibition. Just as they overcome obstacles to be together, Wanqing is diagnosed with a terminal illness. In their final days, they co-create 'The Everlasting Begonia' series, immortalizing their love in art.
