Su Xiaoman, a modern corporate slave, dies from overworking late and wakes up as a 1970s girl sold to Zhou Yanchuan by her father for three sacks of grain. Having heard this “cold-faced man” would end up alone, she runs away right after the wedding—only to be stopped by Zhou at the village entrance, holding her forgotten cotton shoes, ears red: “It’s cold, put them on.” What follows is warmer: when she cuts pigweed, Zhou secretly adds tied grass to her basket; when she craves sugar, a candy appears under her pillow daily; when she mentions wanting to be a doctor, he climbs three mountains for a 《Handbook for Barefoot Doctors》. When she lets her guard down, she learns the truth—the “lonely life” was a lie—Zhou had waited decades in that old house for his “runaway bride.” Turns out, this “forced union” was his hidden love for 20 years, sweet enough to make her never want to run again.
