Down-and-out scholar Lin Bai saves a reclusive "Master Wuneng" and inherits a lost character divination technique—reading hearts and predicting fortunes through characters. To make a living, he sets up a stall at Fengshen Teahouse in the capital, quickly becoming the "One-Word Gentleman" among locals for his ability to foretell fate with a single character. However, this angers Zhao Qing, the illegitimate son of the teahouse owner who seeks control. Zhao Qing frames Lin Bai for using sorcery and even bribes officials to shut down the teahouse. Unwilling to let the technique be disgraced, Lin Bai uses divination to unravel the conspiracy, finds flaws in Zhao Qing's handwriting, and exposes his crimes of embezzlement and persecuting his father in a showdown. Eventually, Zhao Qing is brought to justice, the teahouse returns to peace, and the legend of "Word of Fate" becomes a beloved tale in the capital.
