On her 18th birthday night, introverted Lin Xiaoman’s phone suddenly popped up a mysterious app called “Growth Plan” — complete tasks to earn “Growth Points,” or face the “memory punishment” of forced playback of her late mom’s voice messages if she failed. To get rid of the annoying system, she was forced to tell her dad (whom she’d alienated for three years) “I want your sweet and sour ribs tomorrow,” stand up for her bullied deskmate, and even take up painting again which she’d given up long ago. When she saved 100 Growth Points, the system showed Mom’s final message: “Dear Xiaoman, this is my 18th birthday gift for you — when I’m not around, let ‘growth’ teach you to love and be loved instead of me.” It turned out Mom had secretly designed this system before she died; those “tasks” were just the last growth journey she wanted to walk with her daughter.
