Lin Yang, a modern corporate slave, wakes up to find himself transmigrated into Chen Jianguo—a "phoenix man" (a rural-born man accused of abandoning his roots after success) in the 1970s who just secured a job at a county state-owned enterprise. The original Chen ruined his life by favoring his family of origin and exploiting his wife Li Guilan, ending up with a broken family. Determined to rewrite this tragedy, Lin Yang navigates his mother’s unreasonable demands for money to build his brother’s house, while secretly giving Li Guilan malted milk for her health and helping her fend off harassment from the workshop director. But just as things seem to improve, his mother and brother block the entrance of his workplace, yelling that he’s "forgotten his roots"—and his wife witnesses it all... Can he break the "phoenix man" curse and save his happiness?
