Lin Wan, a retired special police officer, loses contact with her daughter Xiaotang during the university vacation. To uncover the truth, Lin Wan quits her stable job and chases from the water towns of Jiangnan to the deserts of Northwest China, investigating the "volunteer teaching program" Xiaotang was involved in—only to discover it's a front for a human trafficking ring run by a gang with ties to the drug cartel she took down as an undercover agent a decade ago.
