Five-year-old Lin Xiaoman wakes up to find himself reborn as a poor farmer's son—his father broke his leg picking herbs, his mother is about to sell her dowry silver hairpin for rice, and his 12-year-old sister is being forced to be a child bride for the landlord. In a pinch, he remembers the "Plant Class" from kindergarten and digs up valuable wild astragalus in the back mountain. Using silkworm-farming skills from a documentary, he convinces villagers to raise tussah silkworms together. He even uses five coins saved for half a month to buy watermelon seeds and grows watermelons "so sweet the shopkeeper pays double." Just as they save enough to treat his father's leg, the village tyrant Wang Dahu shows up, claiming the silkworm field is his and threatening to tear down the sheds. Watching his mother cry while protecting the silkworm shed, Lin Xiaoman clutches a piece of astragalus in his small hand: Even as a 5-year-old, he'll use his "kindergarten tricks" to guard his family's hope!
