Su Xiaoman, a popular illustrator famous for her "midsummer cicada songs," locks her studio every Summer Solstice—that's her "cicada promise" with Lin Shen, her high school deskmate. Ten years ago, Lin Shen moved away suddenly, leaving only half a cicada exoskeleton and a note: "I'll be back when the cicadas stop singing." Three days before midsummer this year, Lin Shen, in a white shirt holding a cicada exoskeleton, pushes open the door. But the doctor behind him whispers: "His cancer has spread; he won't survive this summer." It turns out Lin Shen has been researching artificial cicada breeding all these years, wanting to give Xiaoman a "never-ending cicada song."
