In a late-1980s small village, Lin Xiaomei was called a "barren hen" by her mother-in-law for having two daughters, with her husband Chen Jianguo too cowardly to speak up. Her own family refused help, seeing her as a disgrace. Desperate, she sold hand-embroidered goods from her dowry at the county market, only to have her stock confiscated by her sister-in-law who reported her for "speculation". At her lowest, she met a merchant collecting folk artifacts and seized the chance to mass-produce rural embroidery. From a stall to a factory, she not only made a fortune but also empowered village women. Her once-contemptuous mother-in-law begged for favors, and her sister-in-law cried to work in her factory. Lin Xiaomei smiled and handed over a labor contract—this time, she would live on her own terms.
