Emperor Chu Heng of Dajing was told by the national diviner that "only after nine marriages can he find his true love." His first eight marriages were all political alliances—until he met Su Wan, a folk storyteller who dared to call him a "tyrant" to his face (not knowing he was the emperor). Chu Heng, alias "Ah Heng," was drawn to her straightforwardness, but soon discovered Su Wan was a former princess of the previous dynasty, hiding to avenge her family killed by Chu Heng's father. When Su Wan raised a knife to his chest, Chu Heng smiled and handed her the abdication edict: "The first eight were for the kingdom; the ninth, I choose you." He'd known her identity all along—those eight marriages were just to stabilize the court, so he could marry her without hesitation the ninth time. Su Wan looked at "Ah Heng," no longer the emperor, and finally let go of her hatred: "This ninth time, I agree."
