Xiao Jingheng (Cao Youning), the "God of War" and "Living Yama" of the Danning Dynasty, is ordered to investigate corruption in the south. However, his military tally is mistakenly stolen by Su Wanwan (Cheng Guo), a "little devil" from the Medicine King Valley who snuck down the mountain—she meant to steal a millennium ginseng to save her master, but mistook the tally for a "gilded token" and took it. To retrieve the tally, Xiao disguises himself as a "frail scholar" to stay close to her. As they interact, he gradually falls for this troublemaker who uses poison needles to make him take medicine, who warms him with her body when he's severely injured, and who secretly helps him check corrupt officials' ledgers... But just as he lets his guard down, Su's true identity is revealed—she's the little princess of the former dynasty he saved years ago! Worse still, behind her theft lies her master's order to "overthrow Danning"! Torn between his duty to the country and the girl in his heart, a sweet-yet-angsty game of jianghu unfolds.
