In a 1970s state-owned factory compound, technician Fang Ping discovers clandestine radio signals in the boiler room, while his childhood sweetheart Li Mei finds his photo labeled as a spy in security files. When the militia raids Fang's home, a fabricated enemy command center appears in his basement. On a stormy night en route to execution, Fang's transport truck explodes. Through the smoke, Li Mei's trembling gun points at him - until the real executed spy Old Zhang tears off his disguise behind her, revealing a doppelgänger conspiracy that turns the revolutionaries against each other.
