Su Wan was the "most useless" sister of Su Mo, Empress of Da Jing—born with fragile meridians that made even holding a sword impossible, yet she insisted on following her sister to the battlefield. She was shot by an enemy arrow and nearly died, only to be scolded as "good for nothing" and confined to the Cold Palace for three years. Three years later, to win over Northern Yan, the Empress decided to marry her off to the Northern Yan质子—someone who had saved her but whom she had deliberately distanced herself from. Su Wan finally snapped: on the eve of the wedding, she burned her bridal gown, left a letter saying "I won't be my sister's pawn," and betrayed the royal family. The Empress thought she wouldn't care, but when there were no more familiar osmanthus cakes on her desk at night, no more hot tea quietly added while reviewing memorials, and no more figure waiting for her return on the city wall, she realized Su Wan had long been etched into her bones. She sent hidden guards to search the entire kingdom and finally found Su Wan running a tavern in a small Jiangnan town—the little princess who once feared killing a chicken was now smiling as she counted money for customers, still wearing the jade bracelet the Empress had given her. When the Empress walked into the tavern in plain clothes, Su Wan looked up, and her voice cracked: "Wanwan, I... regret it."
