Lin Xiaoman returns to a remote mountain village to fulfill his grandfather's last wish and inherit the craft of paper figurine-making. One night, he gets a bizarre order: a set of paper opera performers that can "sing The Peony Pavilion". After finishing, he hears the paper figures sing every night, and is shocked to find the client looks exactly like A Li, his childhood playmate who went missing ten years ago. As he investigates, he uncovers a tragic opera troupe fire in the village twenty years ago—and A Li's death is linked to his grandfather's "dereliction of duty" back then. Xiaoman must break the curse of the paper opera troupe while facing the choice between family love and truth. A "ghost opera" spanning life and death is quietly unfolding in the village.
