Desolate scholar Shen Yan, determined to end his life, risks death to remonstrate in the imperial court for his own execution. Yet every time he angers the emperor, he is mistaken for a loyal minister and saved: when he exposes corruption and begs for death, he is praised for integrity; when he admits his fault and begs to die, the emperor offers him a seat and comforts him. The entire imperial court is confused by this odd man who "can't die but gains favor", shifting from curiosity to panic. Shen Yan soon discovers that behind the emperor's refusal to execute him lies a hidden power game – his wish to die is the key to breaking the situation.
