Ye Zhaoyi, Empress of Daqi, cruelly breaks off her engagement with Gu Yunchuan, a talented scholar from a poor family, to secure her imperial power by marrying a powerful minister's son. But on her wedding day, Gu Yunchuan arrives as the top scholar in the imperial exam, leading all officials to present a memorial asking for the title of "Virtuous Husband"—it turns out he had long seen through her plans and hid his brilliance just to wait for her to return. As Ye Zhaoyi stares at the no-longer-humble man, memories flood back: him taking a stab for her, making ginger tea late at night… She suddenly realizes what she gave up wasn’t just an engagement, but the only person who ever dared to love her soul.
