Lin Xiaoman, a corporate slave, works overtime until midnight. Squatting in an alley and finishing her third can of beer, she stumbles into an old man in a Taoist robe—who shoves a peach-wood bracelet carved with runes into her hand, saying, “This is the celestial fate you owed me in your past life.” From then on, she can see “fortune bubbles” above people’s heads: a colleague’s “unemployment red bubble,” a neighbor grandma’s “longevity gold bubble,” even a “peach blossom calamity purple bubble” above Gu Yan, the male colleague she’s secretly in love with. But every time she uses the ability, her memories fade a little: first she forgets her takeout address, then she can’t remember Gu Yan’s name. When she uses her last bit of memory to help Gu Yan avoid the peach blossom calamity, the old Taoist reappears and smiles: “Do you want the celestial fate, or the right to remember him?”
