Photographer Lin Xia ventures into the Qinling Mountains to capture the legendary "sad deer calls in the empty mountain", only to be stopped by Chen Mo, a forester who has guarded the deer herd for a decade. This "odd man" hides the secret of the herd's collective mourning every autumn night: ten years ago, during a mine disaster, Chen's father accidentally killed the deer king while blasting a path through the forest to save workers—since then, the herd has mourned on the anniversary. Now the former mine owner is back to destroy the forest for a resort.
